Good afternoon Mr. Wellenzohn. Do you remember what you told us at Bauma 2016, that we would have to expect several new things? Well, you respected your words. So, can we start by asking you something about the DEUTZ strategy, from the tcd2.2 to the 9-liter range?
«We believe up to 85 percent of mobile working machines will still be powered by diesel engines in ten to 15 years from now. That is why we have just extended our range to include the powerful new TCD 9.0/12.0/13.5/18.0 in-line engines for heavy-duty equipment with a power output of up to 620 kW» Wellenzohn says.
«Nevertheless, there are still a number of opportunities for improving drivetrain technology in terms of efficiency and emissions. Electrification, in particular, offers great potential for growth. That’s why DEUTZ is now taking the next logical step to further its role as a technological leader in the development of environmentally friendly, efficient engines: under the E-DEUTZ strategy, we are expanding our product range to include hybrid and fully electric drives.
Another potential area for improvement is the use of alternative fuels. The share of gas fuelled engines will increase during the next few years due to their emission-reducing potential. Our new G 2.2 and 2.9 LPG engines provide two compelling solutions that are particularly suited to low-load applications in the material handling and compact construction equipment field.
DEUTZ has also approved the latest generation of its entire TCD engine range for operation with paraffinic diesel fuels and biodiesel or biodiesel blends. This will make a further significant reduction in the carbon footprint of combustion engines. In future, ‘e-fuels’ will also become part of the mix that will enable engines to operate on an eco-friendly, carbon-neutral basis using renewable energy.

TCD 9.0 is the Diesel of the year 2018. Which applications do you see for that?
«With its 300 kW output and 1,700 Nm of torque, the DEUTZ TCD 9.0 is particularly suitable for heavy-duty construction and agricultural equipment such as large excavators, wheel loaders or harvesters. The TCD 9.0 and the TCD 12.0/13.5/18.0 in-line engines are also new. They will enable us to capture new applications and customers. We are honored to receive the DIESEL OF THE YEAR award. It demonstrates that the design of this drive system is a success».
From 2.2 to 18 liters
2.2 and 18 liters. Will these remain the threshold of DEUTZ’s lineup? How about the evolution and technical details of these two engines?
«Right now we have no immediate plans to extend the performance range, but you can be assured that DEUTZ will continue its growth» Wellenzohn says. «For the moment we’re excited to be positioning our new products on the market, starting with the TCD 2.2 at the bottom end of our power range. The engine – based on the successful four-cylinder TCD 2.9 (between 30 and 75 kW) – will be a three-cylinder variant ranging in output from 22 to 56 kW. Both these diesel engines will also be available as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) versions (G 2.2 and G 2.9).
All the variants will be based on the same engine platform, generating extensive synergy effects. These drives will represent a further option, in particular for low-load applications in the material handling and compact construction equipment field. Furthermore, these compact engines are perfectly suited to work as part of our new E-DEUTZ hybrid systems to replace bigger pure combustion engines to improve efficiency and environmental compliance.
At the top end of our power range, the TCD 9.0 four-cylinder and the 12.0/13.5 six-cylinder engines are part of a family platform concept with a standardized customer interface and identical front and rear sides, making it considerably easier to integrate and service the engines. The proportion of common parts is approximately 65 percent, which reduces servicing complexity and optimizes inventory holdings. The new 620 kW six-cylinder TCD 18.0 in-line engine will occupy the upper end of the power output range».
How about the E-DEUTZ strategy?
«The acquisition of Torqeedo has given us access to 12 years of practical experience and state-of-the-art expertise in the field of electric drives. It allows us to accelerate the market launch of our own electric solutions in the key DEUTZ segments. It aims for market leadership in the segment of innovative off-highway drive systems. As this year’s Intermat highlight, we presented a hybrid drivetrain system consisting of a TCD 2.9 diesel engine, electric engine and battery pack with a maximum system output of 110 kW. It’s the first tangible result of our E-DEUTZ strategy. It demonstrates the speed of the collaborative work between Torqeedo and DEUTZ».
